Community House flooding forces Tacky Prom cancellation…again

The Tacky Prom that was scheduled to take place on March 10 in Cornelia has been canceled…again!

Cornelia Community Development Manager Jessie Owensby says the event had to be canceled after the Cornelia Community House flooded a second time. “This time, the floors need to be completely replaced,” Owensby says.

The historic Community House first flooded on January 10 when the fire sprinkler system activated after one of the HVAC units in the building overheated.

“They finished the work on the one side of the building but then the sprinkler set off on the other side of the building,” explains Owensby. She says the flooding wasn’t as bad this time but the upstairs floors will have to be replaced.

“Since it’s only three weeks until wedding season, and weddings are a very important aspect of the Community House, we need to replace those floors BEFORE the season starts.”

Repairs are expected to take up to three weeks to complete.

Owensby had sought to revive the Tacky Prom after learning it was once a popular local event. “I just kept hearing all this buzz about Tacky Prom since the day I started working, and how much fun it was, and that I should do it again, so I thought I would give it a shot!” she said when announcing the event months ago.

She says she still hopes to revive it eventually. “We’re very sorry for all the confusion, but we hope it will be a successful event at another time.”
