Committee turns in recall applications for Davis and Hendrix

A group of Demorest residents are working to recall councilmen Nathan Davis (left) and John Hendrix.

After their first attempt failed, a group of Demorest citizens seeking to recall two of their city council members hopes for a different outcome this time.

The group turned in signed applications Tuesday, September 8, for recalls against Nathan Davis and John Hendrix. Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison tells Now Habersham each application has 110 signatures. Ellison now has 15 days to verify those signatures and determine whether enough eligible voters signed the applications to move the process forward. “If I need more time, I will ask the Superior Court judge to extend it for me,” she says.

If Ellison finds the applications to be sufficient, she will issue the committee recall petitions. At that point, Davis and Hendrix will have an opportunity to challenge the grounds for the recall in court. If the judge allows the recall to proceed, the committee will have thirty days to collect approximately 300 signatures, possibly forcing a recall election early next year.
