The White County Board of Commissioners this week approved two major transportation projects in the county. The first was the approval of a memorandum of agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the replacement of the Town Creek Road Bridge.
The agreement came Monday, January 31, following a presentation from White County Public Works Director Derick Canupp, who told the commissioners the estimated cost of replacing the bridge would be $6-million dollars with White County’s local share only $75-thousand dollars.
Canupp had good news for residents who regularly travel the road.
“In my conversations with the DOT, the bridge, the existing structure, will remain in place while the new construction is taking place and then after which it would be removed. There is still a lot of moving pieces along the way to get it to the construction phase but as of right now that is my understanding that will be the case,” he said.
According to Canupp, the project is currently scheduled for Fiscal Year 2025, but he says that these schedules are very tentative in the event they encounter problems in the design or engineering phase of the project.
The commissioners also voted to accept a Georgia Department of Transportation local maintenance and improvement grant. The money will help the county complete the paving cost of the Claude Sims Road extension (Shepard Drive) that connects the two roads that are extensively used to access White County Head Start.
