The Habersham County Board of Commissioners chairman is speaking out about the sign vandalism over the weekend in Clarkesville. A portion of the sign at the entrance to the county administration building was damaged when someone tagged it with spray-painted expletives. The profanity was targeted at taxes and county commissioner Bruce Palmer.
In his first public comments since the incident, Commission Chair Ty Akins called it a senseless act that was “completely out of line.”
“It is a sad day in our county when someone protesting taxes causes damage to a sign purchased and maintained with tax money,” Akins said in a statement released Monday.
“As commissioners, each of the five of us speaks and votes our conscience in what we believe is best for our citizens. We don’t always agree, but we do respect each other. We work together and communicate regularly to try and make the best decisions we can.”
County crews removed the damaged portion of the sign
early Saturday, July 29. The county did not release details or photos of the graffitied sign, but photos were sent to local media and posted online.
Akins says the matter is under investigation. Law enforcement is working to identify whoever is responsible. Anyone with information is asked to call the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (706) 839-0525.
