North Habersham Middle School student Colton Braswell recently achieved a remarkable feat. Competing against students from all 159 Georgia counties, the 6th grader won the State Middle School Championship in Crop Production at the 97th Georgia FFA State Convention in Macon. The honor underscores Braswell’s expertise and dedication to farming.
A young farmer’s journey
Colton’s agricultural journey began at a very early age. “My Papa helped me get started with growing vegetables and starting a garden,” he explains.
Under his family’s guidance, Colton has cultivated, harvested, and marketed a variety of vegetables, gaining firsthand experience in crop production.
His Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, a cornerstone of FFA’s educational framework, has allowed him to develop practical farming and business management skills. This hands-on approach has enriched his understanding of agriculture and instilled a strong work ethic and passion for the field.
Growing his future
In addition to the state championship he won on April 24, Colton was honored with the Area Two Award.
“I feel proud of myself,” he says, reflecting on the honors.
Colton’s success is a testament to the values FFA promotes: leadership, personal growth, and career success.
As he continues his education, Colton’s experiences and achievements in FFA will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for future endeavors in agriculture. He loves growing, harvesting, and selling vegetables because he likes being outdoors. When asked how he handles disappointment when something discouraging happens, such as storms or insects harming his plants, he says simply, “I just keep on going and praying it all works out.”
Colton plans to continue his pursuit of growing plants and vegetables for the rest of his life.
