Collins supports President’s decision to leave Iran deal

Ninth District Georgia Congressman Doug Collins says he supports the president’s decision to the withdraw from the Iran Deal.

President Trump announced on Tuesday afternoon that he is withdrawing the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran and says he will impose new sanctions.

Mixed reaction

Key U.S. European allies expressed disappointment with Trump’s decision. Democrats and Republicans, too, voiced their disapproval. Former President Obama calls the decision “misguided.” He says the U.S. has been safer in the years since the agreement was reached.

“Without proof that Iran is in violation of the agreement, it is a mistake to fully withdraw from this deal,” says Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) in a statement.

Rep. Collins, whose district includes Habersham, disagrees. He issued his own statement following Trump’s announcement:

“I support President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the folly that is the Iran Deal. I’ve had grave concerns with the deal from the beginning, and I’ve long said that a nation that promotes terror internationally and against its own people has no business increasing its nuclear capabilities. America has no place giving this bad actor legitimacy or economic relief through such a defective agreement. Iran must be held accountable, and I believe we can work as a country and with our allies to rein in this rogue nation.”  – Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA)

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was negotiated in 2015 during the Obama administration. President Trump has been harshly critical of the deal and pledged to withdraw from it during his presidential campaign.
