Ninth District Georgia Congressman Doug Collins is praising the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Donald Trump’s so-called “travel ban”. The Court’s 5-4 decision fell along partisan lines, with Republican appointed justices voting in favor of the ban and those appointed by Democrats opposing it.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion. It essentially states Trump acted lawfully in imposing limits on travel from several predominantly Muslim nations.
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote a scathing dissent saying “a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was motivated by anti-Muslim animus.” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined in the dissent.
Two previous versions of the ban were blocked by federal courts. The ban upheld by the Supreme Court on Tuesday restricts travel from Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
Rep. Collins (R-Ga) – whose district includes Habersham and nineteen other Northeast Georgia counties – expressed his support for the ruling in a nationally televised interview Fox News’ Sandra Smith.
