A major cold front has pushed through North Georgia. Windy conditions and cold air are expected for the next several days.
Despite the cooling temps, we’ll see plentiful sunshine on Thursday. Winds will gust to 30-35 m.p.h. throughout the day. High temperatures will top out around 50 in the warmer spots and cooler in only the low/mid-40s at the higher elevations.
Things will get very interesting across the higher terrain overnight Thursday. A strong upper-level system will push down in the wake of the front, bringing plentiful snowfall to the central and northern Appalachians. Some moisture will likely make it across the border during the wee hours of Friday morning. You can see this wave on the simulated radar above.
You will probably have to stay up late to see any flakes. The best chance for flurries or snow showers is midnight through 4 a.m. Some flurries could continue through mid-morning, but they will gradually taper off.
No big accumulation is expected, although a dusting is possible above 3,000 feet. High-elevation passes like Woody and Neals Gap could be a bit slick before sunrise.
Regardless of precipitation, it will be cold and windy across Northeast Georgia. Winds will be very gusty and come in waves the next few days.
The animation below shows winds gusting to 35 m.p.h. on Thursday. We’ll then see a brief break with more gusty winds over 30 m.p.h. overnight.
Expect another lull on Friday morning before the wind picks back up overnight Friday.
Low temperatures will bottom out around freezing for most of the region, both Friday and Saturday mornings, with the mountains dropping into the 20s.
It’s not officially winter yet, but it will feel like it over these next several days. For you cold-weather lovers, enjoy! Everyone else, brace yourselves and keep your warm coats close by.
