Col. William J. Plutt

Col. William J. Plutt, age 71, of Clarkesville passed away September 6, 2016.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is the son of the late Harry and Evelyn Larson Plutt. He is survived by his wife, Anne, his children, Michael (Immà Jennifer), and James (Delia), one brother, Phillip (Sally), and one sister, Madelyn Ray. He had a quiver full of grandchildren, Ikha Jethro, Jennifer, Jessica and Jamie. Also three great grandchildren, Cameron, Eva and Lily.

Col. Plutt retired from the United States Air Force after 27 years of service, mainly as a C130 pilot. Some of the positions he held while on active duty include: Group Commander, Squadron Commander, and the Professor of Military Science at The University of West Virginia. (Go Mountaineers!)

During his 27 years of service, he was awarded numerous medals and citations including: The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Viet Nam), Viet Nam Service Medal, Republic of Viet Nam Galantry Cross with Palm, and flew missions in support of Desert Shield/Storm. He also earned Command Pilot and the Air Force Space Badge.

He is a graduate of Colorado State University, Air War College, Air Command and Staff College, and Webster University.

After his military service he was the Director of Aviation for Cape Canaveral Airport, the Shuttle Landing Facility, and Valkaria Airport. Later he became the Director of Aeronautics for the Governor and State of West Virginia. He also served as Vice President of Facilities and Maintenance/Aeronautics at Wackenhut.

He was a member of Tallulah Falls United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and involved in many community activities, and Bible Studies. He was a past president of OPOA and an advocate and supporter of CASA.

His was a life lived with honor, integrity and love for God, his country and his family.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 3:00 PM from the Hillside Memorial Chapel with Rev. James E. Turpen, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the funeral on Sunday from 2-3 PM. Interment with full military honors will be later in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver Colorado.
