(Cleveland) – The City of Cleveland unveiled a conceptual plan for the proposed new City of Cleveland Municipal Complex. During a meeting of the city council Monday night Ron Cantrell, with Ron Cantrell Construction, Inc. of Cleveland presented the design plans along with architect George Hlavenka who joined the meeting via Zoom video conference from Hawaii.
Cantrell said the design plans follow 18 months of study and planning.
He said in the beginning the idea was to have the complex constructed inside the former Talon zipper plant in Cleveland, but that idea was abandoned after discovering the structural steel in the old building was severely compromised by rust. Now the plans are to demolish the building and build a completely new facility from the ground up. Cantrell said the old Talon building was actually larger than they needed. The new facility which will contain 37,645 square feet of space will house all of the city facilities (City Hall, Fire, and Police), an 8,000 sq. ft. Community Center plus some tenant space that will be offered to retail businesses.
One thing it will not have is a new White County Library facility, that was discussed in the beginning but Cantrell said there would not be enough parking to accommodate the library.
City officials are asking the public for comments and input on the design plans.
There is much more work to be done before the building becomes a reality, but the demolition of the old Talon building could begin as soon as this fall.
