The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announces the promotion of April Brown to Chemistry Section Assistant Manager of the Crime Lab at GBI Headquarters. In her new role, Brown will be responsible for supervising scientists, scientist trainees, and laboratory technicians in the Chemistry Section.
Scientists in the chemistry section analyze items of evidence for the presence or absence of controlled substances. They support the law enforcement community in both the investigation and trial-preparation stages of criminal cases involving seized drugs.
Brown began her career with GBI in May 2007 as a laboratory technician and became a scientist trainee in 2009. She completed her training in 2010 and began casework in non-controlled substance analysis.
During her career with the GBI, in addition to her regular duties, Brown served as GBI safety officer, quality representative, internal auditor, instrument operator, and mentor for technician and scientist trainees.
She also currently serves as a Southern Association of Forensic Scientists (SAFS) Board Member-at-Large.
Brown graduated from the University of North Georgia in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She is originally from Clarkesville and now resides in Cleveland.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is comprised of four divisions: the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Crime Lab, the Investigative Division, and the Legal Division. The GBI has over 900 employees and a budget of $147,482,036.
