Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner announced Tuesday he intends to run for re-election when his current term expires. Turner was elected to the post in March 2020 in a special election to fill the seat left vacant when Shan Ash resigned.

During a presentation to the White County Rotary Club on Tuesday, July 25, Turner said he plans to run for his own full four-year term.

Turner made the announcement after giving Rotary Club members an update on the state of the City of Cleveland.

Growth and planning

During his presentation, Mayor Turner talked about the recent growth and development in the city. He said city officials have just finished amending the city’s zoning ordinances and mixed-use development, which will allow commercial and residential development in the same building or area for the first time.

Turner shared new and current business expansion plans for the city, including the construction of the new Waffle House on South Main Street.

According to Turner, city officials are working on issuing package store licenses in Cleveland. Five eligible applicants have expressed interest. The city will follow a lottery process to determine who can open the businesses. That should be completed in late fall or at least by the end of the year.

Housing development in Cleveland was addressed along with the city services that go hand in hand with the growth.

“We are excited about what the next 12 to 24 months will bring for the city,” Mayor Turner said.
