Cleveland man faces charges in Flowery Branch accident

Charges are pending against a Cleveland man after a crash that critically injured a moped driver near Flowery Branch High School early Thursday morning.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer B.J. Williams said the wreck happened just before 5:45 a.m. when the moped driver, 36-year-old Christopher Lee Powell of Flowery Branch, approached the intersection of Hog Mountain Road and Credit Drive.

Williams said, “Mr. Powell was stopped on Credit Drive and he was preparing to turn onto Hog Mountain Road. As he sat there, another driver in a pick-up truck, William Emory Olstead of Cleveland, was turning left from Hog Mountain onto Credit Drive. As he turned, he turned into the wrong lane, where Powell’s vehicle was stopped and he struck Mr. Powell.”

Powell was taken to a nearby hospital, where remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to Williams.

Sheriff’s office officials are continuing to investigate the crash, and Williams said charges are pending against Olstead.
