Cleveland man accused of vandalizing church

David Chapman (White County Sheriff's Office)

A 52-year-old Cleveland man has been arrested and charged with vandalizing Liberty Baptist Church in White County. Deputies arrested David Chapman twice in connection with the case.

According to authorities, Chapman was first arrested on October 2 after deputies responded to the 100 block of Ray Palmer Road in reference to a suspicious person call. When deputies arrived around 10:35 p.m., they made contact with Chapman. He told them he was trying to hitchhike to South Carolina and had been threatened by an unknown person in the area.

“Deputies checked Liberty Baptist Church and found intentional damage to the building and evidence that led them to believe David was responsible,” says White County Sheriff’s Captain Clay Hammond.

Deputies arrested Chapman and charged him with criminal damage to property in the second degree.

Investigators later obtained arrest warrants and re-arrested Chapman on October 7 for vandalism to a place of worship and criminal attempt to commit burglary in the second degree.

Chapman remains in the White County Detention Center on $7,500 bond.
