Clermont man sentenced to prison for DUI death of Alto teen

A Clermont man faces prison time after pleading guilty to first degree vehicular homicide and DUI.  A press release issued by the District Attorney’s Office says 23-year-old Colby Dwayne Oliver entered his plea following jury selection and opening arguments in the case on Monday, May 23.

Oliver was charged in connection with a single vehicle wreck that happened just before midnight on February 1, 2015 on the Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway in Demorest.

19-year-old Jimmy Sebastian Tackett was killed when the car driven by Oliver left the roadway and struck a parked car and tree in the yard of a house near Edgewood Drive. A second passenger in the car, 24-year-old Joshua Kesniel Thomas, was seriously injured.

D.A. George Christian says Oliver pled guilty to one count of first degree vehicular homicide, one count of serious injury by vehicle, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, one count of failure to maintain lane and one count of reckless driving.

Habersham Superior Court Judge Chan Caudell sentenced Oliver to 15 years, with the first 7 to be served in prison.
