Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett traded in his blue uniform for a red Santa suit on Sunday.

He and his fellow officers set up a license check on Highway 197 South near Railroad Avenue, but instead of tickets, they handed out presents.

“We are taking the opportunity the night before Christmas Eve to give back to the community,” Barrett told Now Habersham. They spent several hours handing out gift cards and merchandise to unsuspecting – and very grateful – drivers.

Santa joined Clarkesville Police and Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 as they handed out presents to drivers.

The gifts were donated by local businesses.

Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa  and personnel from Habersham County Emergency Services helped with the gift giveaway. Santa also lent a helping hand.
