The prime suspect in last week’s attempted armed robbery outside a local bank is now behind bars. Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett says 23-year old Kevin Michael Conley, Jr. was picked up by police in Madison County, GA. He’s now awaiting extradition to Habersham.
Conley, who previously lived and worked in Clarkesville, allegedly pulled a gun on a man and woman as they prepared to make an after hours business deposit at United Community Bank on West Louise Street around 1 a.m. on June 16th.
Victim reacts
Instead of surrendering the deposit, the driver of the car sped away and the masked gunman grabbed onto the car. Barrett says the suspect was dragged approximately 300 yards before letting go near Robertson Loop Road where he then fled on foot.
He did not get away with any money.
“He was possibly under the influence and he did sustain some injuries,” Barrett says. “He was actually reported to have knocked on nearby residences to receive medical supplies and was treated at the aquatic center later that morning.” The Habersham County Aquatic Center is located less than two miles from where the attempted robbery took place. Barrett says Conley told personnel there he was injured while jogging.
Not a random crime
The attempted robbery does not appear to have been random. Barrett says Conley “did have knowledge of when and where the deposit was going to take place” because he used to work at the business involved. He adds, “Conley may not have acted alone.”
This isn’t Conley’s first brush with the law. He was arrested in Cornelia back in 2014 on shoplifting charges.
Barrett says the investigation into last week’s attempted armed robbery continues and more arrests could be made.
