Barrett says no one else was injured in the shooting. “Right now we have turned the scene and the incident over to the GBI and they have a crime scene investigation unit here and they’re going to be processing the scene.”

Clarkesville City Manager Barbara Kesler says the city will release a statement Monday morning. Until then, she says, she’s withholding comment. The GBI is expected to issue a press release Monday, as well.

Officers with the GBI, Clarkesville and Demorest Police Departments and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. Asbury Street in Clarkesville was cordoned off for several hours Sunday night as investigators processed the scene.

According to the city’s website, Greene moved to Clarkesville in 1992 and opened up a private practice specializing in internal medicine. He served four years on the planning and zoning commission before being elected to city council in 1999. Greene was elected mayor in 2005 and re-elected in 2009 and 2013.

He and his wife Anne have four children.
