The Clarkesville Main Street Board of Directors honored several businesses and individuals Thursday, November 12th at its annual meeting. Members of the Board of Directors presented the following awards:
The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Lynn Dohrmann for serving as a Hospitality Host at the Mauldin House Visitor’s Center for the past four years. A Clarkesville resident, Lynn devotes one afternoon each week to greeting visitors, providing tours and building a scrapbook of local news clippings. “Lynn has gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving this community,” explained Deborah Kilgore, Board Chair, “and her dedication over the last four years is invaluable.”
The Business Partner of the Year Award was presented to Habersham Community Theater (HCT). The partnership with HCT and Main Street brought new entertainment to town. The Dinner and Movie (now titled Movies on Main) event provides movie goers the opportunity to step inside Clarkesville’s original movie house to watch a film on the big screen. The “night out” event encourages patrons to continue the stay local movement by shopping and dining in one of the nearby establishments.
“HCT’s partnership with Clarkesville Main Street to present movies throughout the year gives us a chance to give back to the community which so generously supports us by providing a venue offering additional downtown entertainment,” stated Alta Moseley, of HCT. “This joint venture also allows us to showcase our facility to patrons who might not have otherwise even set foot in the theater. It is our hope that they will return to see one of our live productions and become regular theater-goers.”
Through this partnership, Main Street and HCT have shown “Jaws”, “Back to the Future 2”, “Psycho” and coming November 27th – “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey.
The Golden Nail Award was given to Jon Schwartz, property owner at 1400 Washington Street, for the superior restoration of his historic building. The building underwent a major transformation this summer. The existing shutters and awnings were removed, the façade was cleaned and repainted using colors from the National Historic palette, molding was added to the roof line and new canvas awnings were placed over the front and side entrance.
This property, which is a prominent cornerstone in Clarkesville, has set the standard for excellence in an historically appropriate renovation. The work on this project has served as a catalyst for neighboring buildings, which have since used some of the same design and color options on their storefront.
Not only did the exterior of the building receive a facelift, but the interior is just as amazing. The space has been fully renovated and is available for rent as an ideal office space.
Jon Schwartz, the property owner, is a Façade Grant recipient, and has also been awarded a Main Street Design Award of Excellence for this project.
