The investigation continues into a fire that destroyed a Clarkesville home early Friday.
Around 1:04 a.m. on June 23, Habersham County E-911 dispatched firefighters to the scene of the blaze on Sherwood Drive just outside of Clarkesville. Flames shot into the early morning sky and could be seen for over a mile.
The fire destroyed the more than 2,500-square-foot home. No one was injured, but several dogs inside the home perished, according to Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore.
Units from Habersham County Emergency Services, the Clarkesville Fire Department, and Demorest Fire Department responded, along with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Clarkesville Police Department, and Habersham County Animal Care and Control.
Firefighters battled the blaze until after 4:30 a.m. Friday.
The homeowner escaped safely but lost all his possessions, says Moore. One dog escaped the fire and was picked up by an animal control officer for safekeeping until the owner can re-claim it.
State fire investigators and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the cause, which remains undetermined.
As in all fire investigations, anyone with information about a fire can call the Georgia Arson Control Hotline at 1 (800) 282-5804.
