Habersham County Assistant School Superintendent Patrick Franklin gave a construction update on Clarkesville Elementary School Thursday afternoon to the Habersham County Board of Education.

Franklin explained to the board members that the addition is complete. Since graduation, the contractor has been working on the cafeteria and the grounds. Currently, the project is on time and under budget.

The contractor has expanded the parking lots, remodeled the kitchen, added space to the cafeteria, and added new kitchen equipment. “That is all quickly coming to a close,” he said.

“We should have a permanent occupancy tomorrow,” Franklin told the board members. He explained that the remaining punch list items should be wrapped up by July 22. That will give plenty of time to get everything ready to go and get teachers moved in and be ready to start school.

According to the Habersham School District Calendar, teachers will begin reporting to their respective schools on Monday, July 29. Students will report for their first day of school on Friday, August 2.

On Monday, July 22, the Board of Education will have a special called meeting for its third and final public hearing related to the millage rate not rolling back. After that meeting, board members will have the opportunity to tour Clarkesville Elementary School.

Franklin tells Now Habersham about the cost of the project. He states that the maximum guaranteed price of the completed project was $11,195,627. Expenses paid to date for the project are $9,526,070.39.
