The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, based in Athens, has announced a major promotion among its ranks, and his role will be to serve as a sort of ambassador to the community.

Sheriff John Q. Williams announced on Monday, Jan. 27, the recent promotion of Capt. Wayland Rucker, who will now lead the Field Section for the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. With 27 years of service, Rucker, who has served in various capacities within the department, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.

“I look forward to being able to view the sheriff’s office from a different perspective,” Rucker said. “Seeing first hand how some of the training has molded deputies into their current roles. I was part of the Field Division as a young deputy and now I get to lead from the top.”

As advice for someone just beginning their journey in law enforcement, Rucker said:

“Be patient,” he said. “Learn as much as you can and strive to be the best at your assignment. Have goals and become educated as you try to attain those goals. Learn and understand the process and if you put forth the effort with the proper attitude, the right people will see and acknowledge and you’ll enjoy a successful career.”

The purpose of Clarke County Sheriff’s Office’s Field Section is “promoting justice and developing strong positive relationships between the sheriff’s office and the citizens it serves.”
