Citizen’s “keen eye” helps deputies nab suspect

A suspect who eluded law enforcement couldn’t elude the watchful eye of an alert citizen.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Jarrett Evan-Lee Thomas,  was driving a stolen vehicle when deputies began pursuing him Monday morning. He fled on foot in the area of Mud Creek Road and Duncan Bridge Road.

“After an exhaustive search we were unable to locate him,” the sheriff’s office posted to its Facebook page.

There was concern at the time that the suspect may have been armed.

Thomas wasn’t on the run long.

Deputies and K-9s tracked down and arrested the Eastpoint teen in the area where he disappeared after receiving a tip from a Habersham County resident.

“He went to a residence attempting to get a ride and they called 911,” says HCSO Lt. Matthew Wurtz.

Wurtz says Thomas did not have any weapons on him when he was taken into custody.

Multiple charges

Thomas is charged with multiple violations including fleeing and attempt to elude, aggravated assault, and theft by receiving stolen property. He’s currently being held in the Habersham County jail.

“Thanks to the persistence of our deputies and K-9, and the keen eye of a local citizen, the subject is in custody and will be enjoying our local facility for some time,” HCSO posted.
