Christian and Wilkinson Among Incumbents Facing Primary Opposition

Campaigning begins in earnest today for a handful of contested regional, state and federal races that Habersham County voters will help to decide in the May 24th General Primary.

Mountain Judicial Circuit

Clayton attorney Bruce Russell, Jr. is running against George Christian for Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney. Christian was recently appointed to the post to fill the unexpired term of former D.A. Brian Rickman.

Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Chan Caudell is running unopposed for re-election.

The Mountain Judicial Circuit includes Habersham, Rabun and Stephens counties.

State Primary

50th District Republican State Senator John Wilkinson faces Republican opposition from Roy Benifield of Martin. The 50th District includes Banks, Franklin, Habersham, Stephens, Rabun, Towns counties and portions of Hall and Jackson counties.

District 28 State Representative Dan Gasaway (R-Homer) and District 10 State Representative Terry Rogers (R-Clarkesville) are both running unopposed.

Federal Primary

Ninth District Congressman Doug Collins (R-Hall County) faces four Republican challengers in the General Primary- former U.S. Representative Paul Broun, Bernie Fontaine of Suches, Mike Scupin of Cumming and Roger Fitzpatrick of Cleveland. There are no Democratic challengers for Collins’ seat.

The 9th District includes the following North Georgia counties: Banks, Dawson, Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White. Also portions of Clarke, Forsyth and Pickens.

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson faces two GOP opponents in May. Network engineer Derrick Grayson of Redan and college professor Mary Kay Bacallao of Fayetteville qualified to run against him. Three Democrats – Cheryl Copeland of Hiram, James Knox of Augusta and Jim Barksdale of Atlanta – are vying for the chance to move on to the General Election to face the GOP’s candidate in November.

U.S. Senators are elected statewide.
