CLEVELAND, Ga. – A chimney fire broke out at a home on Warwick Road in Cleveland Thursday night. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, preventing any injuries, says White County Public Information Officer Bryce Barrett.

The incident occurred around 9:07 p.m. on Nov. 13 at a residence in the 200 block of Warwick Road. When firefighters arrived, they observed embers coming from the chimney. The fire was contained, and crews extinguished it within minutes.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of chimney safety in these fall and winter months.

“Many people look forward to the warmth of a fire during the colder months, but without proper maintenance and precautions, chimneys can pose a serious fire risk,” says Barrett.

Before lighting the first fire of the season, residents are encouraged to follow these essential chimney safety tips:

  • Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned annually. Creosote, a highly flammable byproduct of wood burning, can accumulate in your chimney over time, increasing the risk of chimney fires.
  • Burn only well-seasoned, dry hardwoods. Steer clear of burning green or damp wood, which increases smoke and creosote buildup.
  • Install a chimney cap to prevent debris, animals, and rain from entering the chimney, which can cause blockages or damage.
  • Inspect your chimney’s masonry for gaps or blockages that could release dangerous gases or flames.
  • Ensure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test these detectors monthly.

By following these safety tips, residents can enjoy the warmth of a fire safely this winter.
