1 teen in custody, 2 still at large in child’s shooting death in Athens

Three teenagers are facing charges in connection to a fatal shooting in Athens that killed a child, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said.

The shooting happened around 5:37 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at the Hallmark Mobile Home Park on Spring Valley Road east of downtown. A second child was wounded in the shooting. An adult was also injured in the incident, but police said they were not injured by gunfire.

An hour after the shooting, Athens police, assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and GBI, took 17-year-old Julian Cubillos of Lawrenceville into custody. Further investigation led them to obtain arrest warrants for 16-year-old Jayden Brown and 18-year-old Dakious Echols, both of Athens.

Investigators charged all three with malice murder, felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and violation of the state’s street gang act.

A local hospital treated the wounded child and adult for non-life-threatening injuries, said police department spokesperson Lt. Jody Thompon.

Brown and Echols remain at large. Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to their arrest.

“I am sickened by this heinous crime, and my heart aches for the grieving family, friends, and loved ones who are suffering such a tragic loss,” said ACCPD Chief of Police Jerry Saulters. “The Athens-Clarke County Police Department will dedicate our full strength and resources to bring the killers to justice.”
