Chase, physical altercation with police leads to arrest

A brief chase and physical altercation between a suspect and a deputy in Elbert County led to the arrest of the suspect on Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities say a lieutenant with Elbert County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on Washington Highway on Jan. 23 before police attempted a traffic stop.

The suspect, who wasn’t identified, allegedly continued south on Highway 17 and failed to stop. Police say the vehicle then traveled in the opposite lane of traffic near Charles Yeargin Road, then slowed and turned into a driveway.

A deputy then ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle, at which point the suspect allegedly began resisting. In response, the deputy requested assistance and deployed his taser. Despite being tased, authorities say the suspect continued to struggle with the deputy. After a brief altercation, the deputy was able to subdue the suspect and take them into custody.

The suspect is facing charges of DUI, speeding, possession of marijuana, failure to maintain lane, passing in a no-passing zone and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.

Now Habersham has reached out to the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office for the identity of the suspect.
