Chan Gailey to speak at P-Club Hall of Fame Luncheon

Former Georgia Tech and NFL head football coach Chan Gailey will be the guest speaker when the Piedmont College P-Club gathers Feb. 17 to induct two new members into the college’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Born in Gainesville and a longtime resident of Clarkesville, Gailey was a standout quarterback for Americus High School before playing three years as quarterback at the University of Florida, where he graduated in 1974. He has served as the head coach at Troy State and Georgia Tech, and was head coach for the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. Most recently he served as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets during the 2015-16 season.

2018 Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame inductees

Tawanna Moon (’04) of Athens, a two-sport standout in softball and basketball, and baseball shortstop Cole Spedale (’08) of Fort Myers, Florida, will be added to the Hall of Fame roster.

Moon sports numerous awards from Piedmont and the Great South Athletic Conference. On the softball diamond, she was the GSAC Freshman of the Year in 2000 and followed that with four straight All-Conference selections, as well as the GSAC Player of the Year in 2003. On the basketball court, Moon totaled more than 1,600 career points and averaged 15.4 points per game in her senior year at the guard position. She was named to the All-Conference team for three years and was a Piedmont and GSAC Most Valuable Player.

Spedale was named to the GSAC All-Freshman Baseball Team in 2005, and was named to the All-Conference Team in the next three successive years. Spedale currently holds first place in six categories for the Lions in the NCAA era. They include “Highest Batting Average” (.348); “Most Runs (140); “Most Stolen Bases” (101); and, in a sign of toughness at the plate, “Most Times Hit By Pitch (29).

“We are excited to be inducting two outstanding alumni into the Sports Hall of Fame, and we invite everyone to join us to hear Coach Gailey for what is sure to be an interesting talk,” said  P-Club director Justin Scali, head baseball coach at Piedmont.

The event is open to the public and will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, in the Student Commons at the Demorest campus. Tickets are $15 for P-Club members and $25 for non-members. Reservations can be made at www.piedmont.edu/pclubhof. Please RSVP before Feb. 1.
