Chamber Donates to Wall of Honor

Wall of Honor Committee Chairman Larry Whitfield (center) accepts a donation from the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Nov. 30th. The money was raised during the recent Lake Russell 5K and Fun Run.

The Habersham County Veterans Wall of Honor Committee got a financial boost Monday with a donation from the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber presented a $2,500 check to the committee – a portion of the proceeds raised during the Chamber’s Lake Russell 5K and Fun Run held November 14th.

The Wall of Honor is located on property adjacent to the Chamber on Business 441. It features granite slabs with the names of Habersham County’s honorably discharged and KIA veterans on them.

The first wall was erected last year and includes the names of 1,608 of the 4,000 veterans’ names the committee has collected so far. Two more walls will be installed once enough money is raised. A fourth wall is included in the plans for future growth. Plans also call for concrete to be poured to make the site wheelchair accessible and for military branch seals to be carved into the main sign.

All veterans, living or deceased, who were born in or resided in Habersham County for at least five years are eligible to have their names included on the wall. Military discharge papers and proof of residency are required. Forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce. For a detailed list of instructions on how to submit a name visit the Habersham County Veterans Wall of Honor website at www.hcwallofhonor.org.
