A homeowner says he believes his cellphone charger may have ignited a fire inside his home in Rabun Gap Tuesday morning.
Rabun County 911 received the call at approximately 11:27 a.m. for a house fire at 155 Darnell Creek Road with flames showing.
When firefighters arrived, the 1,000 square-foot block structure was forty percent involved. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.
“The homeowner was at home but outside with his pets when he heard a loud pop and was met with flames when he opened the door,” says Assistant Fire Chief Justin Upchurch. “He believed that a cell phone charger could have been the cause of the fire due to where the initial fire was located.”
The fire spread quickly due to the exposed wood paneling as well as the block exterior walls which held in much of the heat.
Fire personnel remained on the scene for approximately two hours. No injuries were reported.
