CDC extends eviction moratorium through July

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, seen here testifying before Congress in May, today extended the CDC's eviction moratorium through July 31.

The Biden administration has extended the nationwide ban on evictions for a month to help tenants unable to make rent payments.

Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Rochelle Walensky signed the extension on Thursday. The moratorium was set to expire on June 30 but now runs through July 31. It marks the fourth time the CDC has extended the measure. The agency said Thursday that “this is intended to be the final extension of the moratorium.”

The CDC eviction moratorium has been in place since September. Public health officials argue it’s needed to help stop the spread of Covid-19 in congregate settings, like homeless shelters.

This latest extension gives the federal and state governments more time to distribute CARES Act funding assistance to renters and landlords. It also allows more time for officials to develop an exit strategy that prevents millions of renters from being left homeless.
