Carroll and Sims take top honors in math tournament

The annual Habersham Central Mu Alpha Theta Math Tournament for fifth-grade students took on a new format this year to adjust to Covid-19 restrictions.

The written test was administered to fifth-grade students at their school and students earning the top five scores for their school were awarded a certificate and medal.

The school winners are:

  • Baldwin Elementary – Ali Shubert, Baylee Vongsay, Lydia Phapakdy, Kaitlin Gibson, and Sophie Del Villar
  • Clarkesville Elementary – Nolan Carroll, Coleton Parker, Hunter Dean, Kendall Doster, and Saniya Lane
  • Cornelia Elementary – Oliver Fuller, Damon Francis Yates, Jordan Castaneda, Coder Constantine, and Maria Teresa Nunez Mungula

  • Demorest Elementary – Caleb Panjic, Jason Phonesaithip, Sam Garnett, Aidan Rodriguez, and Sadie Chambers
  • Fairview Elementary – Elsie Sims, Daniel Moses, Aaliyah Sisavat, Callie Cueva, and Bentley Batson
  • Hazel Grove Elementary – Cooper Cantrell, Bailey Lomax, Jasmine Thongkhamlot, Mateo Vonier, and Hayden Wikle
  • Level Grove Elementary – Ian Matthews, Carter Shadburn, Nolan Steele, Alyssa Chitwood, and Kara Ivie
  • Woodville Elementary – Ricky Cheney, Adley Parker, John Lee, Jerika Alexander, and Grace Stewart

Students who attained the top score (or runner-up if the top scorer could not attend) for their school were invited to a head-to-head competition held at the high school which consisted of ciphering and an intense speed round.

The participants were Ali Shubert (Baldwin), Nolan Carroll (Clarkesville), Oliver Fuller (Cornelia), Caleb Panjic (Demorest), Daniel Moses (Fairview), Cooper Cantrell (Hazel Grove), Carter Shadburn (Level Grove), and Ricky Cheney (Woodville). Elsie Sims (Fairview) and Ian Matthews (Level Grove) were unable to attend and were recognized at their schools.

Elsie Sims earned the highest score on the written test among all elementary schools. Nolan Carroll earned top honors for the ciphering and speed round competition and was recognized as the 2021 Math Tournament Champion.

Each school winner received a trophy and t-shirt, sponsored by McDonald’s.
