A freak accident Friday in Demorest left a driver with apparent minor injuries and an office building needing a new front door and window.
Around 5:10 p.m., a Toyota sedan drove into the Amedisys Home Health Care office at the Williams Center off Historic Highway 441. The car ran through the front door, shattering glass and causing significant damage to the building’s exterior brick wall.
The state patrol accident report says Delores Hunter was parked facing the highway in front of North Georgia Physical Therapy a few doors down from Amedisys. She was on the phone with a restaurant placing an order and had left the car in gear.
It was a wild ride from there as the vehicle “traveled up a curb onto Old Historic Highway 441, traveled north on Historic 441, then traveled off the west shoulder of Historic Highway 441 back into the parking lot,” the state patrol report says.
Hunter lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into the front of Amedisys, just a few feet away from the outdoor seating area for Yonah Coffee.
The 62-year-old Hunter sustained possible minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital. There was no one else in the car with her. Two Amedisys employees were at the building, but it was unclear whether they were inside at the time of the crash.
Local law enforcement from Demorest and Habersham County assisted at the scene along with the Demorest Fire Department and Habersham County Emergency Services.
A trooper from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the crash. No charges were filed against Hunter.
