Burton Lyle Cox, age 90, of Clarkesville, Georgia, formerly of Spring Arbor, Michigan, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
Born on November 22, 1932, in South Haven, Michigan, he was the son of the late Rev. Raymond Byron and Edyth Johnston Cox. Mr. Cox was a United States Army Veteran having proudly served his country. Burton received his Bachelor’s Degree from Greenville College and his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Michigan. He was the Chairman of the Language and Literature Department and Professor Emeritus at Jackson Community College. He also taught at various other colleges, and was cutting edge with computer online learning. Mr. Cox was a self-taught musician; he used his gifts by playing the piano and organ at the Jackson Free Methodist Church and later at Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church where he was also a member. Burton was an avid reader and accomplished musician who enjoyed gardening and gathering with family and friends. Burton will be remembered for his wittiness, sense of humor, easy smile, and above all, his faith and love of Jesus Christ his savior.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Darlene Hughes Cox, and his sister, Dorothy Schulisch.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law: Elizabeth Daniels (John) of Yuma, Arizona, Ruth Kriese of Jamestown, New York, and Joan Hand (Rob) of Clarkesville; grandchildren: Travis Rockwell, Angela Anderson, and Jenna Hand; great-granddaughter, Emma Rockwell; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
