Brush fire quickly extinguished outside of Demorest

A brush fire was quickly extinguished outside of Demorest Wednesday morning. Habersham County dispatch received a call at 9:19 a.m. Wednesday morning about a fire in the woods next to a large pasture on Smith Loop Road.

According to a press release issued by Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore, Habersham County Emergency Service dispatched several engines and EMS to the scene as well as Cornelia and Demorest Fire Departments. Lee Arrendale State Prison fire team and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

The press release states that when units arrived approximately a 100’x100’ area was burning and had endangered one structure and one vehicle.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. There were no injuries reported in the incident. No structures or vehicles were damaged.

The cause of the fire was undetermined but believed to be accidental. Crews were on scene for about an hour.

The fire was located between Ed Tench Road and Can-Trail Drive.

“Habersham County fire officials are keeping an eye on the current conditions as well as the forecast in the near future,” stated Habersham County Emergency Services Operations Chief Jason Davey. “Emergency Services has the ability to control permits that the county issues and officials have been and will continue to be in contact with Georgia Forestry as we continue to monitor these conditions.”

Currently, Habersham County is not under a burn ban.
