Authorities are waiting on lab results to determine the identity of the person whose skeletal remains were found near Cornelia on Thursday.
The remains were found at a makeshift campsite on Highway 105 just north of Old Athens Highway, according to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says there were no immediate signs of foul play.
Investigators sent the remains to the state crime lab in Decatur to be identified. Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell says it “could be several months” before they have a positive ID.
The sheriff’s office asked the GBI to assist in the investigation. GBI spokesperson Natalie Ammons says agents helped local officials process the scene. Sheriff Terrell says officials did not find any evidence that a crime was committed.
The human remains were discovered one day after the sheriff’s office announced it was looking for a homeless man who was known to live in that area.
Stanley Wooten’s family reported him missing after not hearing from him in over seven months. Sheriff Terrell says it’s possible the remains belong to Wooten but officials won’t know for certain until the crime lab releases its report.
