An 8-year-old girl was among four people injured in a head-on collision near Clarkesville on Sunday.

The accident happened at 11:43 a.m. at the intersection of GA-17 and Habersham Mill Connector.

The Georgia State Patrol says 26-year-old Douglas Warren Wade of Tallulah Falls was traveling north on the connector in a 2003 Toyota Camry. While turning left onto GA-17 North, he failed to yield and pulled into the path of a Clarkesville woman driving south in a 2015 Jeep Patriot.

The Camry struck the Patriot head-on.

After impact, the Patriot traveled off the east shoulder of the road and overturned. The Camry came to a final rest on the highway.

AirLife transported the driver of the Patriot, 67-year-old Bonnie Kay Branch, to Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) in Gainesville for treatment. Two passengers in her vehicle also were injured. They’re identified as 49-year-old Charice E Lester of Clarkesville and 8-year-old Skyla Warren. Habersham EMS transported them and Wade to NGMC by ambulance.

The accident happened right in front of Tori Charles’ house. She says the crash woke her up out of a dead sleep. “I thought that it was thunder and wondered why the storms had moved in so fast,” she tells Now Habersham. “It was bad.”

First responders had to extricate at least two of the injured from the wreckage. The accident shut down the highway near the crash site for several hours.

The State Patrol charged Wade with failure to yield at a stop sign.
