Authorities say a drunk driver traveling on the wrong side of the road caused a head-on collision Sunday in Demorest.
The accident happened around 12:45 p.m. near The Torch Worship Center on GA-105/Cannon Bridge Road
Senior Trooper John Crawford with Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa says Carlos Amador of Ellijay was in an SUV that struck a Jeep, injuring a family of three.
The 39-year-old Amador was traveling north on GA-105 in a 2006 GMC Envoy when he crossed the double yellow centerline and traveled into the southbound lane. The Envoy collided head-on with a 2013 Jeep Wrangler driven by Marco Antonio Arriaga of Demorest. Arriaga swerved to try and miss the Envoy. The Jeep ended up crashing into a utility pole. Similar to an accident Friday on the same road, the impact snapped the pole in two.
Arriaga, his wife Fabiola, and their small child were injured in the wreck. Habersham EMS transported them to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where they were treated and released.
Amador was transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment and later booked into the Habersham County jail, according to Crawford. He’s charged with DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, failure to maintain lane, and failure to change his address on his license.
Habersham EMC linemen were called to the scene to replace the broken power pole which was left dangling in mid-air.
The wreck shut down a section of GA-105/Cannon Bridge Road for nearly two hours.
