A 43-year-old Braselton man died on Mother’s Day after a 100 foot fall from the face of Mt. Yonah in White County.
It happened just before 2pm on Sunday afternoon. John Hebenstreit was reportedly on an outing with his family when he slipped on a rock and fell.
The Department of Natural Resources brought in their helicopter and more than a dozen White County, Helen and Cleveland officers worked together to save him. First responders were able to reach him and render aid but his injuries were too severe and Hebenstreit was pronounced dead a few hours later.
The last fatal accident reported on the mountain occurred in 2008 when a 18-year-old woman from Sautee fell to her death after slipping.
