Boys teams fall, girls advance in Sweet 16 action

Thursday night proved the end of the road for more of our local basketball programs.

#3 Banks County (23-5) led #4 Josey (22-7) midway through the third quarter, but the Eagles ran away late to a 77-68 win that propelled them to the Elite 8. The Leopards, fresh off a region title and first round clout of Washington, saw their season end in the Sweet 16 for a third straight year.

Senior guard Kahmal Wiley, with recruits in the stands, polished off his monster career with a 31-point, 10-rebound performance, eclipsing 1,000 career points early in the third quarter. He needed just 16 to hit the magic number. SEE Wiley’s 1,000th Career Point Here!

The Stephens County Indians fell also in a close contest, losing to Upson-Lee on the road 76-70. On the girls side, both Rabun County (27-2) and Dawson County (12-17) won their Sweet 16 games to advance to the Elite 8. The Lady Cats were expected to win, playing at home and currently ranked #2 in the state. The Lady Tigers pulled off the upset on the road however.

Tallulah Falls boys lost 79-51 to St. Francis on the road, while the Towns County Indians fell 75-48 at Calhoun. Of all the local programs in Northeast Georgia north of Hall County, only the Rabun and Dawson girls are left standing.
