Both the boys and girls tennis teams at Habersham Central High School improved their records with 4-1 and 3-2 wins over Rabun County High School at home on Monday evening.
Boys
The Raiders (7-1) picked up wins in two singles matches and two doubles matches against the Wildcats.
In No. 1 singles, junior Lije Smith knocked off his opponent 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets to notch a point for the home squad.
Smith’s No. 2 teammate Josh Burris also emerged victorious in straight sets – 6-1, 6-1 – to get up 2-0 on Rabun County.
Junior duo Tim Caudell and Eli Free took down the Wildcats’ top doubles team 6-1, 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles team of senior Sam Hamilton and sophomore McKinzie Kyle fell 2-6 in the first set, but a strong 6-3 second set win pushed the match to a tie breaker. Hamilton and Kyle picked up a 10-7 win in that tie breaker to secure an HCHS victory for the boys.
Girls
The Lady Raiders (6-2) were able to secure wins in two singles matches and a doubles match to add another win to the record this season and continue their great start.
In the No. 2 singles slot, junior Ava Saxon picked up a straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-2, over her Lady Wildcat opponent.
Junior Phoebe Warren, playing the No. 3 singles match, shut out her opponent – 6-0, 6-0 – in straight sets for a big win.
A senior-freshman combo in the No. 2 doubles match proved to be the overall match winning point for the Lady Raiders.
Senior Ahmia Roberts and ninth grader Kailey OteroBravo also won in straight sets – 6-3, 6-2.
Next up, the tennis squads travel to Jackson County Tuesday to start their region schedule. They’ll follow that with another region match at Apalachee on Thursday.
