Bomb threats temporarily disrupted classes Monday on eight technical college campuses in Georgia. Most colleges were located in the southern part of the state, but North Georgia Technical College in Clarkesville was also targeted.
Around 4:30 p.m., Habersham County E-911 received a call stating a bomb had been found in the Visual Technology Center’s computer center at NGTC.
“The call was specific to our college, but law enforcement is investigating the source of the calls to all the campuses involved,” says Amy Hulsey, NGTC Vice President of College and Community Relations. Hulsey says another southern college outside the Technical College System of Georgia was also threatened.
Personnel from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Clarkesville Fire Department, and Habersham County Emergency Services responded to NGTC’s Clarkesville campus shortly after the 911 call. Deputies quickly evacuated the Visual Technology Center and deployed a bomb-detecting K9 to sweep the building. No traces of explosive devices or materials were found.
The building, which houses the school’s graphics arts and photography programs, reopened to staff and students around 5:15 p.m. Evening classes resumed as regularly scheduled.
