Plans are in the works to renovate two of Habersham County’s oldest schools. During the Board of Education’s monthly work session Tuesday night, school officials announced plans to remodel Woodville and Hazel Grove Elementary Schools.
Facilities Manager Denise Gunn and Superintendent Matthew Cooper spoke during the meeting about the renovations and additions to the two schools. The county is enlisting contractor Carol Daniel to complete the work, advises Gunn.
Cooper said there were “strict boundaries on price” regarding the $4.25 million dollar budget to complete both schools.
The BOE and Gunn have also created a committee to oversee the project from conception to completion. Currently the committee is comprised of educators, nutrition workers and the two schools’ respective principals.
BOE board member Rick Williams questioned as to why no community members were on the committee to which board member Russ Nelson suggested “using the heads of the PTO’s” from each school as selected community members. Cooper stated they will take that under consideration and appreciated the feedback.
The board is currently in the preliminary stages and no date for groundbreaking has been released.
The board also discussed potential activities for the school system in regards to the upcoming Bicentennial. Cooper addressed the group by stating he had “attended the most recent (Bicentennial) meeting”. At the meeting it was announced Bicentennial board member Angela Robinson was designated to submit a history of the Habersham County School System to be featured on the County’s Bicentennial website.
“We also discussed at that meeting developing a curriculum during May,” focused around the December 14, 2018 Bicentennial stated Cooper.
As of now, the Bicentennial website is under construction. To learn more or to get involved in the upcoming celebration visit www.habershamga.com.
