Officials are investigating to determine what caused a boat to explode on Lake Hartwell Sunday, injuring five people. According to wnegradio.com, the incident occurred on the lake around old Highway 29 just before 3 p.m.
Corp. Craig Fulghum of the Department of Natural Resources says two men, two women and a 3-year old child were onboard. When authorities arrived, the boat was fully engulfed in flames and the victims were on the boat ramp being treated for burns by EMS personnel.
All of the victims were transported to the Augusta Burn Center — one woman was flown there due to the severity of her injuries.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by DNR and the Hart County Fire Department.
