HCHS Raiders snap two year losing streak

How do you spell relief? W-I-N, and that’s just what the Habersham Central Raiders did in front of a bundled up, pumped up home crowd at Raider Stadium Friday night.

The Raiders snapped their two year losing streak, crushing the Raiders of North Forsyth 32-7.

The HCHS Raiders got out of the gate first just three minutes into the game when RB Jeremy Jones rushed 10 yards for a touchdown. The Raiders missed the extra point, locking their lead at 6-0. Then, HCHS scored again. QB Bennett Black connected with WR Mason Kinsey on a 68-yard touchdown pass. A failed 2-point conversion left the Raiders leading 12-0 at the end of the first.

And the HCHS Raiders kept on raiding.

Midway through the second quarter Habersham Central’s RB Michael Babers rushed 10 yards for the team’s third touchdown of the game putting Central up 18-0. Another failed 2-point conversion left them there until Babers struck again, this time, on a 1-yard rushing TD with under a minute left in the third quarter. Alex Alvarado nailed the field goal, pushing Habersham Central to a 25-0 lead at the half.

The shutout didn’t last.

The North Forsyth Raiders came back from halftime to score just two minutes into the third. They quickly moved the ball downfield, setting up QB Jacob Bailey for a 1-yard run into the end zone. That TD and extra point were the only points the North Forsyth Raiders would score. Habersham Central’s defense held while Central’s offense continued to roll. Late in the third with under a minute to go Marcus Wilbanks rushed 40 yards for a touchdown, sealing North Forsyth’s defeat 32-7 and handing the HCHS Raiders their first win of the season and first win in 22 games.

Road work to close part of Hwy. 365

Road work in and around Habersham could cause some traffic delays next week.

In Habersham County, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) says a crew will inspect the drainage pipes for State Route 15/US 441. The shoulders will be closed as needed. The faded striping on State Route 105 will be refreshed and the lane will be closed as the new striping goes down.

In Hall County, GDOT crews will replace damaged concrete slabs in the outside lane of State Route 365 northbound about 6 miles north of Exit 24. The right lane will be closed weekdays from 8a.m. to 3p.m. for this concrete work.

Crews will work Monday, Nov. 3 through Friday, Nov. 7. Work hours are 7am to 5:30pm, weather permitting.

Encouragement at the right time…

“Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Yesterday one of my dearest friends called me with a word of encouragement. It couldn’t have been a more appropriate time or delivered better. She  is Puerto Rican and has the enthusiasm of 100 cheerleaders. And when she speaks, you know, the spirit of the Lord is in her.

Sometimes God calls on us to be a source of hope, inspiration, and encouragement to others. The question is “are we listening?”

Do you know that for every negative statement made to a person, it takes 10 positive statements to begin to undo the negative? The spirit of God produces “Joy” not despair. When we use our tongues to degrade others; when we overlook someone who is hurting; when we make derogatory statements against each other, what spirit are we representing?

As I sat on my front porch yesterday, praying to the Lord, I asked God for encouragement. My soul felt downcasted and I did not want to lose His ‘joy’. No sooner had I uttered this prayer, then my daughter brought me the phone and I heard my friend’s encouraging words.

Someone needs to hear from you today. Be the voice that uplifts and strengthens. Be the person God can count on to deliver hope to His people.

  • Speak words of Belief : God is in control. As David stated in the Psalms, the righteous will not be forsaken. We are children of The King! He will take care of us!
  • Speak words of Help: Offer insight and inspiration to those who struggle. Relate to similar problems in your own life or others. Ask what tangible thing you can do to help.
  • Speak words of Affirmation: God is the same God today, yesterday, and forevermore. Nothing surprises Him. No matter what happens in life, He will turn it for good, if you allow Him to do so.

Live daily the role of “Christian.”

SRWA Event tally shows significant increase

Participants eat dinner on a table made from repurposed wood from the mill.

It was all over but the counting. In the Soque River Watershed Association (SRWA) offices today the tallies were in from the Fall fundraiser held at Historic Habersham Mills on Saturday. Close to 150 people feasted on a carribean themed dinner under the glowing lanterns in the old Mill. A terrace overlooking the Soque was the perfect seat to listen to local musicians. A silent auction offered art, gift certificates, baskets and much more. Tours of the historic property gave attendees the chance to see the recently completed renovations and hear about the plans for the full property. An exhibition of the “Soque River Days” project was staged in the former post office and general store. Justin Ellis, SRWA executive director, said it was one of the best events they have had. “It is rare to showcase a historical landmark like Habersham Mill for an event,” he said. “Everything exceeded our expectations and we were able to introduce the community to the mill owners.

The event brought in $9,172.00 and organizers say that it is about $3,000 more than the event has produced in the past. The funds will be used to support and develop the SRWA programs. The mission of the SRWA is to work together with individuals and organizations to protect and restore Habersham County’s Soque River, its tributaries and watershed. For more information about the programs or to join and support go to https://www.soque.org.

Add some pink to your orange and blue

Pink isn’t a color you associate with football but tomorrow night in Habersham County it will be.

The HCHS Varsity football cheerleaders are sponsoring a “pink out” for Friday night’s game between the HCHS Raiders and the North Forsyth Raiders of Cumming. The “pink out” is in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

HCHS Cheerleading Coach Kathy Daniel says, “We are are asking people to at least add a little pink to their orange and blue if they don’t want to just wear pink.”

Daniel says the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will be taking donations at the gate for the Habersham Relay for Life. The annual relay raises money to support cancer research.

Tomorrow is the Radiers’ second to last game of the season. Game time is 7:30pm at Raider Stadium in Mt. Airy.

Locate sex offenders before you Trick or Treat

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is urging parents to visit the county’s sex offender registry before sending their children Trick or Treating tomorrow night. Sheriff Joey Terrell says his office has asked registered sex offenders in Habersham to turn off their outside lights and not distribute candy to children but, Terrell says, the county can’t enforce that. He says, “We asked them, but we can’t make them.”

Parents are urged to steer their children clear of homes occupied by sex offenders. You can find that information online at www.communitynotification.com or by clicking here.

Meanwhile, the Cornelia Police Department says the hours for door-to-door Trick or Treating in Cornelia tomorrow are from 6-10pm.

Clarkesville has no set hours, but if you want to participate in Trick or Treat on the Square the hours are 5-7pm.
