Get your own dirt!

Not one leaf falls without the full knowledge of God. A horse does not drop her foal or a dolphin leap above a crashing wave without the Creator’s eye looking down. All we are, all we have, all we will become are offered unselfishly by God with only the condition that we love Him in return.

“…who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” 1Timothy 6:17

There is no arrogance in His gifts to us, although there could be. My son, Will, told me a joke the other day. There was a debate between God and an Agnostic. The Agnostic said to God, “Anyone can create something.” Our God responded, “then show me.” The Agnostic bent over and picked up dirt to form a creation to which God replied, “Get your own dirt!”

The question then must surface, “Is God your ‘assistant’ or is He your ‘life’?” It is not to be answered quickly but with thought. Many of us call upon God when we need help, when times or seasons are changing in our lives and we feel out of control. We call upon Him when there seems ‘no other way out.’ We don’t speak with Him daily or pray for direction in all that we do. We don’t make our every word – His; our every move – His own.

I remember as a child my Mom requesting that we pray she be able to find a good parking spot. I love that in my Mom. As we approached down town she had no doubt that the Lord would help her find just the right space to unload three small children. Some might say we shouldn’t bother God with such trivia. To them I would reply, I have no doubt the Creator of the Universe smiles when my Mama asks for help finding a parking spot and He diligently moves just the right automobile for her because He is not her assistant – He is her life.

The configurations of the seasons, the setting of the sun, the very signs of greying hairs on our heads are all calculated by God – He has never been surprised – not once.

I remember a time when I received bad news and as I sat trying to take it all in I heard the voice of a friend, “Do you think God is freaking out?”

It took me a moment to take in his words. “Freaking out?”

“Yes. Do you think God is going, ‘Oh no! This is happening to Nora! What can I do? How can I help her out of this?”

The words of my friend still ring in my head anytime I face a tragedy or uncertain situation. If God already knew in advance that such would occur in my life, then He already knows what needs to be done to get me through it. I only need to roll up my pants legs, tighten my boots, and get going. And because God is not my assistant but my life, I willingly must be able to trust that He is in control and will take care of what needs to be done. I only have to do the work here and believe.

God weaves His history into our lives, preparing the way, giving the direction, providing the answer.

Hawg Wild to reopen after fire

Sign posted on door of restaurant Friday, August. 7, 2015.

Hawg Wild BBQ in Clarkesville is set to reopen this afternoon after being temporarily shut down due to a fire. Employees say a clothes dryer used to wash restaurant linens caught fire Thursday morning and caused smoke damage. Public health and safety inspectors checked out the facility Friday. As of 12 noon, management said they were waiting on one more “walk through” before getting the final go ahead to reopen.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the restaurant plans to reopen between 3 and 4 p.m. Friday, August 7th.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Today, find strength in knowing Who will help you through the day.

When we meet the minds of others, we can better understand one another. Today, meet the mind of Desmond Tutu, a South African social rights activist and retired Anglican bishop. He received worldwide fame during the 1980’s as an opponent of apartheid.

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” – Desmond Tutu.

First day of school a success

Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper.

Habersham County Schools’ Superintendent Matthew Cooper reported of the first day of the new school year that “we had our best first day of school ever in the four years I have been in Habersham County. I was able to visit all 14 of our schools today and found many smiles and positive attitudes. Numerous teachers and administrators expressed to me how smooth the start of school was this year. I want to thank our students, parents, teachers, and staff for a great start to the 2015-2016 school year. There is no doubt in my mind that we are going to be able to take our mission of ‘success for all students’ to the next level this year!”

White County Starts New School Year

(Cleveland)- White County public schools students returned to the classroom Thursday. There has been a lot of work going on recently to get ready for the students, teachers and administrators have been working to prepare for the classroom activities.

Transportation is another area where work and planning has been done. White County School Transportation Director Pat Schofill said the public needs to be aware of a new middle and high school traffic pattern, “ we do have a different traffic pattern in the afternoon with our middle and high school routes. We’re going to be picking up at the middle school first, then loading there, and then loading at the high school second. Our buses will be on the roads a little earlier, they’ll be on the routes about 3:20 as we get settled in a few weeks.”

As far as the buses Schofill said they’re ready, “our buses are in good shape, we feel good about it. Cut a couple of routes, with two less buses on the road and we’re just gonna work and find out where the students are and if we have buses that are crowded we will work on that the first couple of weeks to kinda level that off.”

Fire temporarily closes another Clarkesville restaurant

A morning fire at Hawg Wild BBQ on Grant Street forced the restaurant to temporarily close Thursday. The restaurant sustained smoke damage after employees say fire broke out in a clothes dryer.

No one injured

Katie Dowis is a server and hostess at the popular restaurant. She says she saw the smoke when she pulled into work Thursday morning. “Our dryer machine caught on fire this morning. They said they smelled something smoking this morning and as soon as they called the fire guys it had already caught flame.” Dowis says there was damage to the office and smoke damage to the restaurant.  “It didn’t really ruin anything in the restaurant, we’ve just got to clean up the smoke.”

Now Habersham reached out to Clarkesville Fire Chief Jerry Palmer for comment. He’s not yet responded.

Clarkesville restaurant fires

This is the second restaurant fire in Clarkesville in less than two months, the third in the past sixteen months. The Huddle House on Washington Street sustained heavy damage when a grease fire broke out on June 17th of this year.

Pet Crematory Smoke Causes Brief Scare

Fire billowed out of the Smithgall Pet Crematory Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015.

(PHOTO/Dean Dyer)

(Cleveland)- A brief scare Wednesday night when neighbors called White County 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from Charles Smithgall Humane Society and Adoption Center on Highway 75 between Cleveland and Helen. Fire, Medical and Sheriff ‘s office personal were dispatched at 7:01 PM.

A Helen fire unit was the fire unit to arrive and discovered the smoke was coming from an animal crematory located behind the main facility.

Center officials arrived and advised that the gas company had just installed a new regulator and the fire was burning much higher than normal, in fact flames were coming out of the top of the crematory smoke stack.

Fire officials on scene advised shelter officials that the crematory was too close to a stand of pine trees that could easily catch on fire and there were numerous pet crates stacked next to the very hot crematory.

Shelter officials said they would be addressing the issues Thursday. The animal shelter is a no kill shelter, but officials said they were cremating for a private individual, who’s pet had just died.
