Applications Being Accepted for Road Beautification Grants

ATLANTA—The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announces a call for new applications for the 2015 Roadside Enhancement and Beautification Council (REBC) Grant program (formerly known as the GATEway Grant program). The mission of the REBC Grant program is to provide funding for enhancement and beautification projects along
Georgia’s roadsides.

Since 2008, the Georgia DOT has awarded 126 grants totaling more than $5 million dollars for the grant program to governments and civic groups around the state. The grant program uses revenue from contributory value fees paid by outdoor advertising companies to the Georgia DOT for vegetation removal in front of outdoor advertising signs. Funds from the grants are allocated towards purchasing and installing plant material along state routes throughout the state.

Any organization, local government, or state agency may apply for grants (maximum $50,000) for landscape enhancement of the state right-of-way that involves the local community and displays the right-of-way in an attractive manner promoting further pride in Georgia. Awarded grant funds may be used for landscape plant material, sod, topsoil, mulch and labor costs associated with the approved items. The REBC encourages the use of Georgia Grown materials for projects.

“The REBC Grant Program is a great opportunity for local organizations and governments to show pride in their communities by beautifying the right-of-way along State Routes,” said Georgia DOT Landscape Architect Manager Bill Wright.

The REBC will review the applications and make their award recommendations to the Georgia DOT Commissioner. The REBC is comprised of representatives from various organizations and agencies appointed by the Governor. Those include the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia, Sierra Club, Garden Club of Georgia, Georgia Wildlife Federation, Georgia Conservancy, UGA College of Environment and Design, House and Senate Transportation Committee Chairpersons and the Georgia DOT Deputy Commissioner.

New grant applications, legal forms, and instructions can be obtained at the REBC Grant program website: www.dot.ga.gov/IS/Funding/REBC. For additional questions about the grant program, e-mail [email protected] or call 404.631.1399.

The deadline for the 2015 application submission is Monday, November 16, 2015. Please mail all of the required, completed forms to the Georgia DOT – Office of Maintenance, Landscape Architecture, One Georgia Center, 600 West Peachtree Street, NW – 10th Floor, Atlanta, GA 30308

All applicants will be notified by mail with the results of the awards, and the REBC webpage will be updated with a list of grant recipients. Awards are anticipated to be announced in the spring of 2016.

Businesses Ready to Build-out New Retail Space in Cornelia

Eight businesses will begin individual build-outs in the new retail space on Hwy 441, beginning the next two weeks. The businesses located beside the Cornelia Walmart are: Rue 21, Great Clips Hair Salon, Sally Beauty Supply, Shoe Show, Sexy Nails, Little Caesars, Cato Fashions, and an eighth retailer not yet announced.
The project is being constructed by RKR construction headquartered in Bremen, Georgia. The company is completing a similar project beside the Walmart store in Cleveland, Georgia. The Cornelia building is approximately 22,000 sq. feet. The owner is Sansone Group from St. Louis, Missouri. The development company has invested almost $ 6 million dollars in purchasing property and developing the retail space.
According to Now Habersham sources, Cato Fashions will begin their build-out before the end of August with the other retailers following soon after. Sheetrock, electrical, and HVAC are being completed in all spaces the next few days.
The construction timetable appears to allow for most of the businesses to be open for business during October. Over 100 new parking spaces are also being constructed directly in front of the building. Landscaping began last week. The new stores will add to Cornelia’s annual sales tax revenue which is typically over $300,000 each year.

God has heard your cries…

beauty girl cry

Deuteronomy 7:21 -23, “Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God. 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.”

At the time of the writing of this scripture, the Israelites are threatened by many nations: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites – seven nations who are much larger and stronger than they are.  Some of you may say, “That sounds like my life right now. I feel like I’m being hit from all sides.” And some of you are under great fire right now.

Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God For me, this is the most powerful part of this scripture and our lives. Acknowledge and accept that the power with you is our great and awesome God. You are not alone in your problems. You will not be fighting this battle alone. God has a solution. He has a plan. He is rolling up His sleeves. You have no reason to fear. God is near.

You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once – This is the tough part of the scripture. Even though God could flick His fingers and everything would go away, He doesn’t. Because He knows what is up ahead. Something far worse. Something that will harm His plan. Something that needs readjusting. Whatever the reason, He isn’t going to wipe out all your trials at once; because He sees a better way.

or the wild animals will multiply around you – God knows that if He just flicks His finger and destroys seven nations, a greater problem awaits the Israelites. The wild animals will multiply and the Israelites will be overcome by them. Sometimes we just want an answer. We want God to take it all away. What we don’t realize is a bigger trial is lurking on the outside we don’t know about yet; but God does. I’m sure the Israelites just want their enemies to ‘GO AWAY’! They aren’t thinking about the wild animals around them because at the time, the wild animals are of little concern. There is enough population to keep them away. God doesn’t do anything haphazardly. He sees the whole picture not just the part we are in.

But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed – Understand that God sees you. He knows you exist. He knows your pain, your problems, your dilemmas. He has not forgotten you. He may need to take care of things a little by little; but, He will deliver you.

I want to encourage you, God has heard your cries at night. He sees the problems you face and He knows the outcome. He is preparing the way for you, little by little.

Habersham Commissioners Approve Funding for Projects

Rainy Night for Habersham Commissioners

Heavy rains poured down on the Habersham County Court House Monday evening as Commissioners met for a brief public meeting, barely 20 minutes in length. The Commissioners approved an application for sales of alcohol (by package) for the Circle K Store at 5000 Talmadge Drive and Historic Old Highway 441 in the Hollywood area. The store is currently a Kangaroo Convenience Store, but is being converted to a Circle K Store, requiring a new alcohol license.

Landfill Gas Issue
The Commissioners also approved the installation of a Soil Vapor Extraction System at the Habersham Landfill. The system will help extract methane and other gases that accumulate underground at the landfill. Laurie Church, with the Habersham County landfill, says about 1600 feet of perforated PVC pipe is buried. “The holes in the pipe allow gasses to enter and then they flow out the end into the air,” Church related. Unfortunately, simple non-mechanical ventilation does not do an adequate job of extracting landfill gasses. The Environmental Protection Division for the State of Georgia requires a more aggressive removal of gasses. Habersham County Public Works Director, Derick Canupp, told Now Habersham, “The new system will use an air pump that will pull gasses from the pipe underground.” A good question might be, can the methane gas be collected and sold? “No,” says Canupp, continuing, “Habersham just does not have a large enough footprint to make it financially feasible to collect methane gas at the landfill.”

Habersham Airport Upgrades
In other action, the Commissioners approved just over $17,000 for roof maintenance and gutters for Habersham County Airport. One of the hangers at the airfield is in poor condition and needs work in the near future.

Public Defender’s Office to be Renovated
Commissioners also approved a $137,188 project by Grizzle Contracting Inc., for Public Defenders Renovations. The project will renovate the old Magistrate’s Court offices on Grant Street so that the space can be used by the Public Defender’s office, according to Drew Powell in the Defender’s Office.

Land Ownership Transferred at Habersham County Airport
After a half-hour public meeting, the Commissioners met in closed session for about 40 minutes. Following the closed session, the Commissioners voted to approve a land transfer to the County for a 3.52 acre tract of land from the Development Authority. According to Habersham County Commissioner Andrea Harper, District 2, “There is an area at the end of the air strip, near the old Fish House Restaurant. It has become a large hole from having dirt removed and shifted around, so the ownership was transferred from the Development Authority to Habersham County.” Harper went on to add that the transfer of ownership did not require any funding or costs. With that unanimous decision, the Commissioners adjourned.
