Community Rallies Around Baldwin Fire Chief

Around 500 BBQ plates made up for sale at the benefit BBQ lunches to help out Joe Roy. Smiling faces all around.

Another weekend, another strong show of support from the community for recovering Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy. The chief was seriously injured in an accident last month.

On August 15th, motorcycle enthusiasts took part in a benefit ride for Roy. This past weekend, people turned out for a chicken barbecue and raffle sponsored by the Baldwin Fire Department.

Baldwin City Administrator Tommie Perry says 500 chicken dinner plates were sold Saturday. Proceeds from that and raffle tickets raised $9,400 to help Roy with his medical expenses.

While the community support and prayers have lifted Roy’s spirits, Perry says he still has a long road to recovery ahead. “Joe is coming along good. Just taking it day by day. The arm he had surgery on is doing well. It will be four more weeks before doctors can determine when they will begin physical therapy on his shoulder.” Perry says Roy continues to undergo tests for symptoms related to his injuries.

Roy suffered a broken shoulder blade and severe lacerations to his left arm and head when he was hit by a truck during a boot drive fundraiser on Duncan Bridge Road at Mud Creek on July 25th.

Countdown On To Family Fun Fest

The countdown is on to one of Habersham County’s biggest events of the year. The annual United Way Family Fun Fest is this Saturday, August 29th from 5-9PM at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville. It’s the official kick-off to the local United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. Habersham County United Way Executive Director Billy Boyd says hundreds of volunteers have spent the past four months planning and organizing the event. “It’s all coming together,” he says, “It’s just the little detail stuff that’s left to get it set up.”

There will be carnival games and rides at the Fun Fest along with a full line-up of family entertainment (see below). Admission is $5 for everyone and includes unlimited rides, games, entertainment and fireworks. Food and merchandise will be sold separately. VIP parking will be available in front of the Aquatic Center for $15 – the price includes a coupon for a free car wash. Free shuttle buses will be available for those who park across the street at the county fairgrounds.

Cash and credit cards accepted

Boyd says two new events have been added this year – laser tag and sumo wrestling (the inflatable bodysuit kind). Other than that, “Basically the games and rides are what we’ve had for the past few years,” he says.

news-united way 2015This is Boyd’s first year at the helm of United Way organizing Family Fun Fest. He succeeded Bonnie Loffredo as executive director last fall. “I don’t think I had a grasp of how much work and coordination of effort goes into making this happen,” he says. “There are three, four, five hundred people involved. It’s a huge event and we couldn’t do it without volunteers and community support from our sponsors.” Boyd says he’s hoping for good weather and a good turnout on Saturday.

The Habersham County United Way supports 25 non-profit agencies. This year’s fundraising goal is $575,000. The campaign theme is “Get in the Game” and Boyd says, “It’s certainly a team effort, that’s for sure.

Downtown Splashdown Makes Big Splash in Clarkesville!

Dozens of families found a fun way to beat the summer heat in Habersham Friday at Clarkesville’s Downtown Splashdown! The event was hosted by Clarkesville Main Street. It featured water slides, a bounce house and fire hydrant sprinkler opened wide for all to enjoy. The summer evening air was filled with squeals of delight, music and lots of laughter. If the sight of giddy kids playing on the city square doesn’t make you smile, perhaps the rainbows will. There were lots of them captured on camera as the late August sun beamed through the misty air.

Downtown Splashdown! is the latest Friday Night Live event to be held in Clarkesville. The monthly events are aimed at encouraging people to shop and eat downtown and enjoy all this northeast Georgia town has to offer.
