Lightning Causes Two Structure Fires In White County

(Cleveland)- Lightning most likely was the cause of two house fires in White County on Wednesday. White County Public Safety Director David Murphy advised in an email, At 2:45pm, a structure fire was reported at a rental home on Lavender Lane in the Mountain Lakes Resort.

Firefighters reported that lightning ran down a tree hitting the roof of the home and igniting a fire in the bedroom located below. Murphy said, firefighters from Stations 6, 3, and 5 with automatic aid from the City of Cleveland were dispatched and extinguished the fire.

The occupants were in the unit at the time, and Murphy said, no injuries were reported. The cabin did sustained significant damage. The management at Mountain Lakes relocated the occupants to a different unit.

Murphy also advised at approximately 9:30pm Wednesday, a fully involved structure fire was reported on Logan’s Ridge in Northern White County. Firefighters from Stations 6, 3, and 5 with automatic aid from the City of Cleveland responded.

A neighbor reported the fire during the lightning storm and advised that the owners were out of town. According to Murphy the structure was a complete loss and the detached garage apartment sustained minor heat damage.

No injuries were reported.

The State Fire Marshall will be investigating, said Murphy.

(Cleveland)- The Cleveland Captain D’s Restaurant has been recognized as the best in the nation from 517 stores and has been awarded the Captain D’s PRIDE Cup.

Former White County School Superintendent Albert Taylor Dies

(CLEVELAND) – A former Superintendent of Schools in White County and principal in the Hall County School System, Albert Taylor, has died. Taylor, who was 84, passed away Tuesday at his farm on Adair Mill Road in White County.

His career in education spanned over many years beginning with the White County School System where he was a teacher and counselor. Later, he would serve as Dean of Students at Truett McConnell College in Cleveland.

Taylor served the Hall County School System as principal of Riverbend Elementary School and McEver Elementary School as well as the positions of Transportation Director and Comptroller. He later retired as Superintendent for the White County School System.

The funeral will be Friday at 12:00 at the Loudsville United Methodist Church Campground. Private interment services will follow.
