Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents About Telephone Scam
(Cleveland)- The White County Sheriff’s office has issued a telephone scam warning after several residents received calls from people posing as court or law enforcement officials telling the people they missed jury duty and there’s a warrant going to be issued for their arrest.
Captain Scotty Scarbrough, with the White County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division said, The scammers tell residents they can pay money and avoid being arrested. The have to buy a prepaid card and give them the numbers from that card.
Scarbrough said the callers have done their homework and even use local officials names, such as White County Sheriff Neal Walden, when they call.
Captain Scarbrough admits, the victim in most cases are caught off guard with the phone calls and are understandably upset at the prospects of a warrant being issued for them. He also said in some cases they even threaten to come to their house.
This is a scam, said Scarbrough, and if you should get a call like this you should just hang up on the person calling. This is not the way the sheriff’s office or the court system operates and everyone should be on guard. The scam many times is targeted at those 65 or older, so if you have a family member, friend or neighbor that you might feel could fall victim to this please alert them.
Scarbrough reminds everyone NEVER give personal information to anyone who calls your home, especially social security numbers and other private information. If you should received one of these calls after you hang up on them call the White County Sheriff’s Office and advise them about what happened.

MedLink White County Holds Grand Opening
MedLink Georgia held a grand opening for its new facility in Cleveland on Thursday. Medlink operates primary care clinics across North Georgia, offering a sliding scale fee for those who qualify. This is the eleventh site serving over 20,000 patients in the region.
According to wrwh.com, MedLink CEO Dave Ward said it’s been part of MedLink’s strategic plan to come to White County for many years. He adds, he hopes the new center in Cleveland will make a positive impact. “It’s a privilege to come here and offer the services. You know, community health centers offer not only primary care, we’ll bring in other services as needed; things like pediatric, women’s wellness, occupational health” and more.

Ward also pointed out that MedLink also offers help to people choosing their insurance plans through the federal insurance exchange. “We have licensed navigators on staff that will come and work and set up appointments in our centers, as well,” he said.
Along with city and county officials on hand for the celebration, State Representative Terry Rogers said MedLink will be good for the county. Rogers said, “As we all know, health care is a growing problem in this country and what Medlink does is phenomenal and I echo both the Mayor and Commissioner Goodger in saying, thank you for being here, and we look forward to a long and profitable relationship in White County.”
The White County Medlink clinic is located in the former Cleveland Family Practice office on North Main Street in Cleveland. MedLink also has facilities in Habersham, Banks and Rabun Counties — among others.
